1. Today is Pentecost Sunday, and we shall have a second collection for the Maria Assumpta University in all the Masses. Please let us support and donate generously. May the good Lord bless you all.

2. Our May Devotion continues and starts at 5 pm, at Ave Maria Station.

*Personal belongings for a two-day stay (Clothes, Wrapper, Toothbrush, Towel, Bathing soap Etc).

4. The Maria Assumpta Church Warden will meet today, 24th of May, 2026, immediately after the 9:30 am Mass. All members are expected to attend.

6. In line with our reverence for the place of worship and holy place, we humbly remind and admonish our mothers with children, to please maintain discipline in their children, order, and cleanliness inside the Cathedral, Ave Maria Station, and outside of the Cathedral environment, by not littering the Church with biscuit wraps, pampers, or tissue paper. Please note that we have waste bins around the Cathedral, trash them there. Remember, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”

7. The need to visit the sick, elderly, and bereaved members in our Parish. Please see the Priests who are ministering within the Cathedral for such caregiving.

8. Sunday, 31st of May, there will be a second collection in all the Masses at Ave Maria Station.

9. The burial Mass for the late Mrs Stella Opara of Assumpta Station will take place on Friday, 29th of May,2026, at the Cathedral, Mass starts at 11:00 am.

Pentecost Sunday Year A

Readings: Acts 2: 1-11; 1 Cor. 12: 3b-7, 12-13; John 20: 19-23

COME O HOLY SPIRIT

The promise made by Jesus to his disciples is fulfilled. He promised them the gift of the Holy Spirit. And as it would be, it became a moving experience that transformed the timid disciples into eccentric witnesses of the gospel. The Church of Christ was born. And, since then, the Church has been imbued with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and continues to transform generations of people through the gift and presence of the Holy Spirit.

On that Day of Pentecost, the Spirit enabled the disciples to speak in different tongues but one message (Acts 2:1-11). All those who gathered felt their impulse and acclaimed the saving power of God they had heard from the disciples. Each of these people from different parts of the world took this message home and shared it. And little did they know that the Spirit had begun a gradual transformation of the religious landscape of the then-known world. It is the same Spirit for the different spiritual gifts; it is the same Lord for the different forms of service, and it is to the same God for the different workings (1 Cor. 12:3b ff.). To each of us, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for a special benefit. We become members of the same body even as we form its different parts.

According to the gospel (Jn 20: 19-23), when Jesus made his first visit to his disciples after his resurrection, he brought them the gift of the Holy Spirit. It was the Spirit that gave them a share in the divine privilege and authority. He gave them the power to forgive or retain sins, and it is sin that bars us from the grace of God. Jesus cared so much about the world he had died for and wanted to give the Church the power to make it easier for many more to have a relationship with him and his Father. The Spirit is meant for the common good.

The purpose for which the Spirit is given is what we could seek through prayer and fidelity to the Word of God. The Spirit enables us to speak and bear witness in the name of Christ the Lord. It is given to the Church to enable us to receive the forgiveness of our sins and to keep the body of Christ holy and spotless as it awaits the Second Coming of the Lord of history. It is tied to the work of evangelization of all peoples and every generation, as held sacred by the Church. The body of Christ is enriched through the gift of the Spirit in all the sacraments of the Church, of initiation, of the Holy Eucharist, and regeneration. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are received so that we can bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. These fruits include 'love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control' (cf. Gal. 5: 22, 23). We may identify and seek the true, the good, and the beautiful in every sphere of life.

As the third Person of the Most Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit continues to be the manifestation of God in our presence. Because Jesus is glorified, the Spirit is sent to the believers. Therefore, he is a gift to the Church. He continues the work of Christ in our midst. The Church finds solace in his presence. To those who seek him, he comes to dwell upon and enable them to do good works. In him, we have our ability and grace. In him, generations of Christians have been born, and transformations of peoples have been enabled. If we resent his presence by denying him, we shut him out from our undertakings. We are left with ordinary human ingenuity exposed to another divine conspiracy, like in the Tower of Babel. The God who dictates the boundaries of nature and creation also places us on the horizon of his providence.

Hence, with the rest of the Universal Church, we have a reason to invite the Holy Spirit to come and renew the face of the earth. We are not in doubt about how much we need this renewal in our lives, our church, our communities, and our world. To our weakened Christian witnessing, we need the Holy Spirit to come and awaken the courage of witnessing. To our world being defiled by all sorts of competing mundane ideologies, we need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, to come to enlighten us, to teach us, and to open to us the truth of all time. There is a certain area of needed grace and renewal for us individually and collectively. In these areas, we seek the divine presence of the Holy Spirit to transform, from our one-on-one relationship with another to our spiritual lethargy, our politics, and our economics. The Holy Spirit comes if he finds a willing heart and a generous space in us where he can descend to transform. Here lies our challenge to grant him a space to begin anew. And this is why we must again pray, "Come O Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of the faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love; Send forth your Spirit and our hearts shall be recreated, and you will renew the face of the earth"!
